Dhanush’s Maappilai has started rolling in Chennai and all eyes are on its leading lady Hansika Motwani the new entrant to Kollywood, where there is a dearth of heroines.

She is just 18, and has already done 10 films so far in Hindi and Telugu and one Kannada film out of which 8 are super hits.

So is this striking new face going to give the current hot favourite Tamannaah stiff competition?

She has already snatched the youngest heroine tag from Tammu, but the cute looking Hansika says: “I’m competing with myself first, as my aim is to improve my performance in every film of mine. I’m not bothered about what others are doing and I want to excel in what I do”.

Interestingly, Hansika was to make her Kollywood debut in director Vishnuvardhan’s Sarwam, which did not happen. But now she is happy, as she considers Mappillai as a perfect launch film in which she plays heroine to Dhanush, one of the top heroes in Tamil cinema.

Adds Hansika who has the perfect balance of glamour and quintessential girl-next-door looks: “I am having a blast shooting with Dhanush, and Vivek in Chennai. I am open to do more Tamil films”.

Born in Mumbai, India, Hansika is currently enrolled in B.A political science from Cambridge University. Hansika mainly speaks, Marathi, English, Hindi and although her native tongue is Sindhi. Her father is Pradeep Motwani (a businessman), and her mother is Mona Motwani (a dermatologist).

Film Career

Hansika made her debut in Puri Jagannadh's Telugu film, Desamuduru, starring opposite Allu Arjun. The film is about a crime reporter who falls in love with a sannyasi, played by Hansika. She also has a Hindi film entitled He: The Only One in where she will be essaying the role of a killer, hell bent on taking revenge for her family.

Hansika made her debut as a leading actress in Bollywood with Himesh Reshammiya in Aap Ka Surroor. She played the role of Himesh Reshammiya's lover Ria. The film was released on 29 June 2007 and which did not do well at box office except the songs were good. Hansika made her debut as a lead actress in Kannada film Bindaas with Puneet Rajkumar.The film was released on 15 February 2008.

She paired with Jr. NTR in the film Kantri which was released in May 2008. The film was a Super hit.

Hansika was born on August 9, 1991 in the Sindhi speaking Motwani family in Bombay, India. Her dad, Pradeep, is a businessman, while her mom, Mona, is a Dermatologist. She has an elder brother, Prashant. She is a student in Podar Internation School. Her parents divorced during 2004, while she continues to live in Andheri, Bombay, India, with her mom.

She has appeared in many TV serials, for example 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thee', 'Hum 2 Hai Na', 'Desh Me Nikla Hoga Chand', 'Shakalaka Boom Boom', 'Celebrity Fame Gurukool', and 'Tum Bin' as a child artiste. She also appeared as such in several TV commercials (e.g. Pepsi, Samsung, Hyundai Santro TV, and Bournvita).

Her mom's client, none other than Juhi Chawla, noticed Hansika and recommended that she act in movies. She was accordingly signed by for 'Yahoo' with herself and Govinda. Unfortunately, this movie was shelved.

This did not stop Hansika from acting as she has now appeared in a total of 5 movies in Hindi, as well as several regional language movies (e.g. Desamuduru in Telugu, Sarvam in Tamil).

She speaks Hindi and Tulu fluently. She is involved in physical fitness and diet with Mickey Mehta. At the age of 16 she has three staff persons, as well as her mom, to manage her career.
